We’re presenting this story in a quarter-letter sized format. The image in the header of this post is the cover. Over the next month or so, we’ll be sharing more of our production process as we produce the book. I’m really proud to announce that production has officially started for our next zine, Uncle Art Appeals His Conviction to Indiana’s Supreme Court. In lieu of payment, Christine opted that we make a donation to a woman’s shelter instead, which we were happy to oblige. We explained our concept for the book and Christine was onboard. We approached Christine and explained that while we couldn’t fit the story in Impropriety, we still wanted to work with her and to make a standalone zine out of it. It’s a challenging read, but we both believed very much that it is a story that needs to be told. This story deals with sexual abuse, beastiality, rape, murder, and suicide. Like me, she was similarly left floored by this disturbing but important and well-crafted story. I knew how the piece was formatted wouldn’t work with the layout of Impropriety, but I passed it along to Rebekah anyway to hear her thoughts. I couldn’t stop thinking about the story in the days that followed, and kept coming back to it. Uncle Art is a monster that Christine survived and too many others didn’t. Christine Fair, takes excerpts from her uncle’s appeal of his murder conviction and weaves the passages into a personal essay that fills in the rest of the story and the impact her uncle’s actions had on her and her family. The hardest rejection we had to make was for a piece titled Uncle Art Appeals His Conviction to Indiana’s Supreme Court. While some of the work we received was easy to reject, either because it wasn’t on theme or didn’t meet the requirements or whatever, we had to make some really difficult choices for the thirteen works that we finally selected for Impropriety. We assumed we’d get more submissions than what we would have received through just relying on our usual channels, but we were caught off-guard by both the volume and the quality of the work submitted. This was our first experience using this platform as publishers, and we really had no idea what to expect.
